Tapping into Cassava Stem Production Opportunity in Nigeria

Tapping into Cassava Stem Production Opportunity in Nigeria

Cassava is a staple food in many sub-Saharan African countries. Due to its wide range of products, including prepared foods, flour, animal feed, alcohol, starches, sweeteners, etc., cassava production and processing practices remain largely habitual in many producing countries. The stem production is a crucial part of cassava farming, and this is a huge opportunity that agripreneurs can tap into.

IITA GoSeed is supporting the development of a sustainable seed system in Nigeria by providing high-quality cassava Early Generation Seeds to seed companies and certified seed entrepreneurs to enhance farm-level productivity and motivate farmers to focus on farming as a profitable venture.

In collaboration with the National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) for quality control and certification, IITA GoSeed supports entrepreneurial smallholder and commercial farmers who are interested in establishing a profitable cassava seed production enterprise towards diversifying their income and improving their productivity.

Since profitability largely depends on good agronomic practices coupled with selecting the right seed varieties, IITA GoSeed promotes seven high yielding varieties with distinct characteristics for a wide selection of customers. Check out our improved varieties below:

At IITA GoSeed, we exert strict quality control measures to produce 100% virus-free cassava seeds. Our seeds are certified by NASC and we take full control of our production activities from the laboratory to the nursery and finally to the fields to ensure that only the best cassava varieties are available to farmers across the country.

Using improved stems derived from our top-notch production practices ensures maximum yield. Here are picture testimonials from one of our outgrower fields where we harvested a minimum stem yield of 600 bundles per hectare and 3 – 8 kg of cassava roots per stand in September 2019.
